Wayne Orpin

Last Updated 12/10/2024Posted in Veteran Stories

Wayne Orpin wasn’t sure what to do when he got out of high school. He didn’t see a future in his life, so he decided to join the military. He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1954. Wayne completed Basic Training at Sampson Air Force Base in Geneva, NY. From there, he was sent to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi for training to become a Radio Repairman.

During this time, Wayne was sent to Korea. When he returned, he was transfered to Hanscom Field in Bedford, Massachusetts, where he remained until 1958.

During his time at Hanscom Field, Wayne became an Electronics Technician while attending Northwestern College at night. He said it was hard working and attending college classes, but he was successful and received his degree in engineering. Wayne was married and has three grown children, along with a furry friend named “Pussycat.” He is a collector of Lionel Trains and Chelsea Clocks.

Wayne’s project is part of Purple Heart Homes Operation Veteran Home Renovation. Local financial partners, Credit Unions and volunteers help to identify older Veterans who need a ramp, grab bars, railings, a clean yard or a fresh coat of paint on the inside or outside of their homes and will raise the funds needed to complete the projects on Veterans’ homes.

The initiative has been developed to help make life for older Veterans and their caregivers a little easier, so they can age safely in the comfort of their own homes. Mr. Orpin suffered a heart attack and appreciates the assistance in making his home more comfortable.

Purple Heart Homes partnered with Hanscom Federal Credit Union, and we appreciate the volunteers that will be assisting to replace the windows at Mr. Orpin’s home so he can remain warm this winter.
