Organizations Gather for 1st Annual Veterans Aging Summit

Purple Heart Homes, in partnership with the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) and the National League of Cities (NLC), and with support from The Home Depot Foundation, hosted the 1st Annual Veterans Aging Summit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Friday, October 20, 2017.

The summit brought together thought leaders from across the nation who combine the aging-specific nonprofit network, veterans’ organizations, researchers, educators, public policy makers, community leaders, government representatives, practitioners, and others to collaborate on better serving and meeting the needs of older veterans and their caregivers. Panel discussions addressed the urgent and significant roles that local government, community based housing, supportive service providers, and interested funders play in serving our nation’s most vulnerable heroes.

Major General Charles H. Swannack, Jr. (U.S. Army, Ret.) provided opening remarks to kick off the summit. All of the following panelists, moderators, and speakers sustained proactive dialogue throughout the day, which ultimately resulted in a call to action for everyone in attendance to share these discussions with their communities and beyond.

“It was a very successful meeting indeed. I came away inspired to do much more for our aging and veteran populations,” says Charles Cloutman, VP of Meals on Wheels Central Texas.
