When you have dual passions – traveling and help When you have dual passions – traveling and helping people – you find a way to do both. For Melissa Mathis, that was enlisting in the Navy. Not only did she get to tour the world, she was able to help her fellow sailors.

“My job as a Radioman wasn’t just a job, but integral in saving lives and missions with telecommunications.”

Petty Officer First Class Mathis served in both Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was during this service that she sustained injuries with lifelong complications. She was diagnosed with intervertebral disc syndrome which resulted in limited motion of her arms and paralysis of the sciatica nerve.

With her service complete, Mathis eventually found herself in North Carolina with her three children. Over time, her injuries became worse and she was no longer able to maintain her home. That’s when she reached out to Purple Heart Homes.

Purple Heart Homes, along with @homedepotfoundation, provided the Mathis family with new electrical and plumbing systems, a new floor, and new appliances.
